Hotter Weather Means More Bees

Summer is finally here. Temperatures are starting to climb and the days are getting hot.  Kids are splashing and playing in the pool or running under a water sprinkler to cool off.  Well the bugs are no different.  Ants, wasps and yellow jackets will be attracted to these watering holes to provide their colonies with the moisture they need to survive.

This is the time of year when yellow jacket and hornet’s nests start to form. Nests can be made almost anywhere; in the ground, attached to a tree or bush, in a rock wall, in a crevice in your home, attached to an overhang.  These nests start out real small with just one bee that survived the winter. As they build their nests and make egg cell cavities they deposit eggs and they soon begin to hatch. With each hatching they have a larger and larger work force and can build the nest even faster allowing for more egg deposits. These nests sneak up on most people and unfortunately they seem to find them the hard way.

If you are seeing increased bee activity there is a good possibility there is a nest brewing close by. Don’t ignore this situation, the consequence could be severe.  All County Pest Control STRONGLY recommends that you NEVER attempt to handle a bee nest on your own.  As simple as it may seem the outcome never seems to be a good one. Someone usually gets stung, and a lot of time a hospital visit is inevitable.  If the nest is within the structure of the home, treating yourself from the outside only will just force hundreds of bees to move deeper into your home and showing up in all sorts of rooms. If you a husband, at this point you are probably on the phone with us being scolded by your wife.
