As we move into the early stages of spring, days start to get longer and the overwintering pest world starts to plan their emergence. These pests will soon be in search for food and shelter and will find everything they need in and around your home.
- Inspect all gutters, leaders and downspouts to ensure that they were not disturbed during winter. Make sure that they are still connected and properly intact. Inspect that there is proper flow of water and that all roof and foundation water is directed away from the house.
- Inspect the exterior grounds for any fallen trees or wood debris that may have collected. These become great nesting sites for Carpenter Ants and Termites. All wood debris should be removed from property.
- Inspect exterior portions of the house, look for damaged or deteriorating wooden members such as; deck posts & stairs, fences & posts, window & door frames and alike. These wooden areas, especially with soil to wood contact are subject to rot and are a major attraction for Carpenter Ants and Termites.
- Inspect all unfinished basement areas, crawl spaces and utility areas of your home. We rarely visit these portions of our homes, but need to inspect for any cracks in foundations or signs of leaks or ground water. Dampness and moisture is the main attraction for pests into the home.
- Inspect attic and roof areas for any damage or signs of leakage. Ice damming is a major concern in the north east and is known to lift roof shingles and force water inside the structure. Carpenter ants will easily take up nesting in these roof environments.
