February is the month of love. With Valentine’s Day celebrations, people focus on couples. Well wildlife is no different. This is the time of year when squirrels are finding their mate. They tend to move indoors to find a safe, warm location to establish a breeding nest. Timing is crucial, as soon as they are detected, proper measures need to be taken to advise them that this is not the place to be.
All County can offer the installation of one-way doors that allow the squirrels to get out, but can’t get back in. This is the best method to move these critters out. Once they are gone, the entrance can be sealed with wire mesh until a more permanent solution/repair can be made.
Once you get closer to March, mother’s may be having their young, and at this time it is not wise to seal the adult squirrels out, as major destruction can occur on when she tries to get back in to take protect her young. At this time you may have to wait for the young to mature, then deal with the whole family.
This point in winter you may also be finding some stray Stink Bugs. This is an indication that you should be taking measures in the early fall to limit the number that get into your home. Not much can be done once Stink Bugs are already inside. In cases of large infestations, an attempt can be made to treat attic areas and try to get some relief. Exterior perimeter applications to the house and landscape shrubs in early fall is the best method to control these new creatures.
