How to Handle Springtime Ants

March is the time for winding down of winter and melting snow, temperatures start to rise and the insect world starts to come alive.

Home owners need to make sure that all drainage waters are directed away from their homes and are properly working. Now is the time to recognize and repair any damage to roofs, gutters, down spouts or any parts of your drainage system. Preventing water damage and rot is the key to preventing most household pests, especially Carpenter Ants.

Homes with basements and crawl spaces need to assure that no water is penetrating the foundation and causing moisture and rot problems. Extremely damp basements can lead to spiders, crickets, sow bugs, millipedes, centipedes and other moisture insects.  Correcting moisture problems and running a dehumidifier will go a long way in reducing the presence of these pests.

This time of year is when Carpenter Ants start to wake up and start to get their colonies back up and running. They will start to leave nesting sites, which could be in damp areas of your home which is any area that may have a moisture concern. Faulty windows or doors, leaks around showers, tubs or toilets, roof leaks and alike. The ants will be on the move looking for high energy foods.  Most of the time, this lands them in your home and feeding in your kitchen. Carpenter Ants love what we eat, and with the combined nesting sites and food source they will be happy to stay for a long time.

Any signs of these ants early in the season could very well be a sign that there is a well established nest within your home. The location possibilities could be endless.  If you fear this is the case, the sighting of these ants early in the season should not go without concern.  We recommend you call us here at All County Pest Control and schedule an Inspection/treatment to start the control process.
